Background of the study
Igbo, like many African languages, exhibits considerable dialectal variation. In Onitsha, dialectal differences influence syntactic constructions, leading to variation in word order, clause structure, and connective usage. This study examines how these dialectal differences affect syntactic structures in Igbo, focusing on variations between urban and rural speech communities . Researchers have noted that while standard Igbo tends to follow a relatively fixed syntactic pattern, local dialects may display considerable flexibility due to historical, cultural, and social influences. Fieldwork involving recorded interviews and narrative analyses has revealed that certain syntactic phenomena—such as inversion and alternative clause embedding—are more prevalent in specific dialects. The study aims to systematically document these variations, analyze their underlying causes, and assess their implications for mutual intelligibility and language standardization. By comparing data from various Igbo dialects in Onitsha, the research seeks to contribute to theoretical models of syntactic variation and to inform language planning initiatives aimed at preserving dialectal diversity.

Statement of the problem
Although dialectal variation in Igbo is well recognized, there is limited systematic research on how these differences affect syntactic constructions in Onitsha. Preliminary evidence indicates that dialect-specific syntactic patterns complicate efforts to establish a standardized form of Igbo, yet detailed documentation is lacking . This gap hinders the development of comprehensive language policies and educational materials that can accommodate dialectal diversity without compromising mutual intelligibility.

Objectives of the study:

To document syntactic variations across Igbo dialects in Onitsha.

To analyze the impact of dialectal differences on sentence structure.

To recommend strategies for standardization while preserving diversity.

Research questions:

What syntactic differences exist among Igbo dialects?

How do these differences affect overall sentence construction?

What measures can balance standardization and dialectal identity?

Research Hypotheses:

Dialectal differences significantly influence syntactic constructions.

Nonstandard syntactic patterns are more prevalent in rural dialects.

Effective language policy can harmonize these variations.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it elucidates the effect of dialectal differences on Igbo syntax, providing critical insights for language educators and policymakers. The findings will facilitate the development of curricula that respect dialectal diversity while promoting clear communication across Igbo-speaking communities

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to syntactic constructions in Igbo dialects in Onitsha and does not cover phonological or lexical variations.

Definitions of terms:

Dialect: A regional or social variety of a language.

Syntactic Constructions: The arrangement of words and phrases to form sentences.

Igbo: An indigenous language spoken in southeastern Nigeria.
